Courtney the Artist

Following in the footsteps of my father, I started my craft with the intention to document people as they are, where they are. While in a photojournalism class in 2014, I learned that my camera could be a way to form bonds with others, many of whom I met in the same moment that I sought to photograph them. In each photoshoot turned interview, these people chose to trust me just as I needed to trust myself in the delicate process of choosing to see, really see, another person. And I learned that magnifying another’s life could reflect back so much of what I was curious to uncover within me.

That intimacy is exactly what propelled me in search of deeper connection through storytelling.

With each project, I use visual media to explore the questions that arise in my own life. I think to myself, how does this feeling show up in others; how does it connect or divide us; how can I convey just how complex it is? Knowing that life is made of contradictions, I am drawn to stories that challenge what is ‘picture perfect’. In my work, I leave room for unsettledness and space for questions because I believe we are always in progress and process.

Finally, as a student of Earth and Spirit, I am inspired by the lessons given to us by nature that sing of interconnectedness, companionship, and resilience, and I love to witness them manifest, particularly within marginalized communities. Through my craft, I hope to contribute powerful stories that echo generations forward and back a message on a humanity that is healing and stronger by doing so, especially when we do it together.
